I'm going through gas rings on one of my carbines every 2-3k rounds! WTF? I've tried everything; replaced bolt carrier, replaced bolt, replaced rings with a different type, changed ammo. Only thing left I can think of is the gas tube or gas block - but what is it that causes this. Doesn't happen on any other rifles I have or have ever had. It's a carbine length system on a 16" barrel.
Thanks,
KD

I'd look at the ammo as a possible source of the problem. All of my Milspec M4's with shorter barrels from 10.3" to 14.5" with a lot of full auto fire still last out to 5-8000 rounds before changing the gas rings. My ammo was always MILSPEC Green tip M855 or precision/Match ball.
If you get into some of the ball ammo produced now, seems that the ball powder/propellant is hotter. All of the foreign ball is crap IMHO, including the US Branded ball made in Israel.
My Crane Tech built SPR has only been fed Black Hills Ball and Match ammo and bolt/rings/extractor springs are still going strong at 8000 rounds with only rapid fire.
If you go to the gapless rings like Crane put on the Mk 18 CQB upper and you are still eating the rings.....Id's look at ammo.
Keep your powder dry

How many rounds have you fired through the barrel? Has the gas port eroded? You might want to remove the gas block and measure the port.
What indications are you having other than the rings? Any signs of over pressure (ejector smear on the casing rim, blown primer, etc). My best guess is the block or tube.
Ammo or too large a gas port. Over gassing can wear gas rings, and non-Milspec parts can also be a problem.......Definite sign of over gassing is harder recoil and wear on gas tube at bolt carrier.
Another indicator of overpressure is brass fragments left on the bolt face. Change out your gas block. I'm fresh out of ideas after that.
Too much gas. You can salvage the barrel by using a punch to shrink the gas hole or just replace the barrel. There's some gas blocks that have adjustment, but I guess that is OK for a beer can killer, not a working carbine.
Kyle, I'm betting the gas-port has eroded and that's over-gassing the carbine and smoking the rings. A new barrel is probably called for. You could dial the gas back with an adjustable gas block, but if you've shot it that much, accuracy loss might not be too far behind, anyway.
